I worked on the ICL series machines for several years as both a systems programmer (most of my time) on George 3 support on user sites (maintenance and writing enhancements) and George 2+ development with ICL; as well commercial programming in COBOL and PLAN, with some FORTRAN thrown in for good measure on GINO-F support. And then we used that language, IntAL, to write the compiler for AL to produce what was called the ALGOL R Compiler for the Series. The FORTRAN compiler for the series was very poor; I think it generated inefficient code, and had lots of drawbacks; and so when we produced the ALGOL R compiler, it was actually a fast.

Fortran with Parallel Programming - CRC Press Book The programming language Fortran dates back to when a team of IBM engineers released the first Fortran Compiler. The aim of this book is to introduce the concepts and ideas involved in problem solving with Fortran 77 using an interactive timesharing computer system. 44 moles χ. ALGOL 68 (short for Algorithmic Language ) is an imperative computer programming language that was conceived as a successor to the ALGOL 60 programming language, designed with the goal of a much wider scope of application and more rigorously defined syntax and semantics.

The very earliest computers were hard coded machines which could only run one program and needed rewiring to run anything else.

Inthe Manchester Baby became the first stored program computer, a machine which eliminated the distinction between code and data and used the same storage mechanisms for both, allowing ‘rewiring’ simply by changing the contents of storage. The S3 language that was used to write the ICL VME operating system and much other system software on the ICL Series was a direct derivative of Algol However, it omitted many of the more complex features, and replaced the basic modes with a set of data types that mapped directly to the Series hardware ed by: A.

It can compile the “full language” (including formats, unions, flexible arrays, recursive modes, parallel computation, etc.).I've not done much actual programming in assembler in the last 20 years, but it's still very useful to have a good working knowledge of assembly to be able to diagnose compiler bugs.
